The Gamtoos River Valley is a strikingly lovely environment. The valley floor is composed of rich soil, irrigated from the Kouga Dam at the far end of the valley, and is lush and green with citrus orchards and market produce. The valley is in fact one of the the country's most important citrus farming areas.
Each side of the valley are hills rising to mountains in the distance. As irrigation methods improve, causing the same quotas of water to stretch farther than in the past, so the orchards are beginning to climb the hillsides as well. The combination of hills and valleys, distant mountains and lush greenery makes the valley extremely scenic. As befits such an idyllic area, lying as it does almost on the doorstep of Jeffrey's Bay and only a short drive from the city of Port Elizabeth, it is a popular destination for holidaymakers who wish to have access to these exciting places and yet stay in the bucolic quiet and beauty of the country. In addition, being as it is at the entrance to (or exit from) the Baviaanskloof, many visitors to the Wilderness Area use Patensie as either a stop-over place on their way in or out, so as to maximise their time in the Baviaanskloof, or stay in Patensie and make day trips there and back. Not surprisingly, Patensie abounds with accommodation of all sorts, including guest houses and self catering. One of the latest of these is Aviance Guest House, purpose built to the highest standards as a self catering guest house.
